Timing is very important in politics just like it is very necessary in deciding when to do some other things in life especially for those that value proper planning....CONTINUE READING THE FULL ARTICLE>>>

The wise new entrants into political contest for key posts such as Governor will not want to run against an incumbent. The only people that can do that are established and popular politicians who believe that they have the competitive edge especially when the incumbent has not performed very well in his first term. This is one of the reasons why it may not very wise for Dele Adeleke (a new entrant) to contest for governorship ticket against his uncle, Senator Ademola Adeleke under the same party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

The timing is wrong because Dele is a new entrant in the race while Gboyega Oyetola is an incumbent Governor seeking second term in office. As a new entrant, coming into the race when no incumbent is seeking reelection may be a better timing for Dele. On the other hand, Ademola is a more established politician who ran against Oyetola in 2018. So, he could decide to launch a comeback this time. After all, he was leading the election until it was declared inconclusive in Ile Ife area. The rerun that gave Oyetola of APC the final victory is another story for another day.

Apart from the timing that is wrong, the performance of Ademola in 2018 suggest that his outing was not poor. He was close to victory before things went the other way. It would be recalled that the Osun APC was united then. The then Governor Rauf Aregbesola was heavily backing Oyetola. But things are different now. Osun APC is in crisis with Oyetola and his erstwhile godfather in rival factions. This could help PDP this time especially if the party presents a strong candidate. Obviously, it is not a time for a new entrant like Dele when more established politicians may have better prospects for the PDP.

Finally, since Dele claimed that APC failed to fulfill its promises during its almost four year reign in Osun State, this factor could help PDP at a time like this. The best way to work against an incumbent is to use the failures of that administration to campaign against it. That is, if the claims are true and there are facts to back them.

Dele can team up with his uncle to do this better this time around instead of contesting against him. Imagine having a candidate that others in PDP will back to challenge the APC in the election at a time like this when the ruling party is in crisis and when some Osun people may be thinking of trying another party, it may work for them.
