It has been said that Potter would be sacked immediately if he had lost today’s home game against Leeds United but he has escaped as a result of their narrow victory. It was a hard-fought win for the blues as they took their revenge on the side that defeated them by 3-0 in the first leg.

Thanks to the second-half goal by Wesley Fofana which secured the win for the blues. The defender scored a header from Ben Chilwell’s assist.

However, a review of a few previous coaches at Chelsea shows that they have an ex-player in their backroom or coaching staff to be successful at the club. For instance, Maurizio Sarri had Zola as his assistant to guide Chelsea to a Europa League triumph in 2019 and finishing third place in the league.

Thomas Tuchel on the other hand had Peter Cech as the club’s Technical and Performance advisor and there was a time the ex-goalkeeper was seen training Kepa Arrizabalaga and Edouard Mendy. This shows how working with a club’s ex-player could be key to success.

Currently, John Terry is a coaching consultant at Chelsea’s youth academy and can be promoted by Potter to be part of his coaching staff. The club legend will ultimately contribute to Chelsea’s success and in turn, save Potter’s job.
