In 2007–08, the Argentine played in a fantastic three-pronged attack alongside Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo. A surprising transfer to Manchester City followed the conclusion of his two-year loan from Manchester United.

2. Peter Schmeichel

Peter Schmeichel’s departure from Manchester United to join Manchester City was seen as the worst betrayal in the club’s history, according to Red Devils supporters. When it was reported in 2002 that Schmeichel was joining City, Gary Neville was livid.

The failure of the Old Trafford club to find a goalkeeper of comparable ability for a long time after losing the Dane, who was instrumental to the Red Devils’ triumphant trip in the 1990s, damaged the club’s support base.

When he returned to form in 1997–98, his remaining seasons at Old Trafford were disappointing. And then, in 2002, Cole jumped ship from Man U to City.

4. Owen Hargreaves

United paid close to £17 million to get Owen Hargreaves in 2007. The right side of the field was where his job was most clearly delineated and played under Ferguson.

Hargreaves appeared in 34 games for Man United in all competitions, helping the team win the Premier League and the Champions League.
