The lack of quality players to suit a four-man defense is one of the reasons why Tuchel chose to stick with 3-4-3 lineups at Chelsea so far. Chelsea utilized more of the 3-4-1-2 lineup last season with Mount operating more like a “10.” Their wing-backs were almost like attackers which cost them greatly when caught on counter-attacks. And since Chelsea will be signing good attackers, the manager will choose to use rely on their strengths next season.
Both Pulisic and Ziyech struggled last season as they didn’t perform to expectations, it appears that both players lack the skill to be consistent which is not something to be tolerated in a big team. Tuchel wants results, Chelsea fans want results, and the new owner will certainly want the same.
Chelsea has reportedly reached an agreement with Leeds United over the transfer of Raphinha with the signings of Sterling and Ake expected to follow in the coming days. Nonetheless, this is how Tuchel might be forced to set up his team next season: 4-2-3-1 formation
Nathan Ake proved at Manchester City that he has the quality to thrive in a four-man defensive line, so he would be partnering with Thiago Silva. Ake is very good under pressure, can read the game, is good in one-on-one situations, and can deliver long-range passes. So his combination with Silva will be great as Chilwell and James will occupy the flanks.
Kovacic and Kante will remain Tuchel’s choice come next season and rotating them with Jorginho if any of the three players didn’t leave this summer. Mason Mount will then occupy the number “10” role where he’s given the freedom to run all over the pitch, helping both flanks when Chelsea has the ball.
Sterling, Werner, and Raphinha are expected to lead the attack. Sometimes, Havertz will play too as Tuchel likes him a lot. The talented forward could replace Werner and play as a false nine. More so, Chelsea will still need a proper striker next season.
Do you think Tuchel switching to a 4-2-3-1 formation next season will result in success?
