According to reports we obtained from Daily Post, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) via a tweet on its verified social media handle, has revealed that it will sue President Muhammadu Buhari, and his administration if they go ahead to borrow the amount of 2 Trillion Naira....CONTINUE READING THE FULL ARTICLE>>>

According to SERAP, incessant borrowing is against the oath of office, as stipulated by the constitution.

In their words, SERAP wrote thus:

“We’re suing President Buhari and his administration over yet another plan to borrow N2 trillion despite the N33 trillion debt burden facing Nigeria.

Persistent borrowing is antithetical to the constitutional oath of office. We’ll see them in court to end the debt crisis”.

Bearing this in mind, do you think SERAP’s move to sue President Buhari and his administration, is a wise decision?

My Opinion:

As we may know, the Nigerian Senate has given their approval for President Muhammadu Buhari to go ahead and borrow the 2 Trillion naira.

Hence, in my opinion, since the Senate, who are lawmakers of the federation, and having weighed the pros and cons of the N2 trillion loan, gave their go-ahead order, then, it means that President Muhammadu is not going against the ethics of his office or according to SERAP, being “antithetical”.

Therefore, SERAP’s move to sue Buhari over the N2 trillion loan to be borrowed, in my opinion, is a misplaced priority.

To start with, the money that is to be borrowed will be used to implement projects and solve other national challenges such as insecurity. The loan, therefore, is for the good of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Instead of planning to take Buhari to court, what SERAP should be after is to ensure that when such an amount of money is borrowed, it is adequately and effectively utilized.
