The 25-year-old, who hasn’t seen much action for Barça this year, started Wednesday night’s UEFA Nations League match between the Oranje and Poland.

De Jong was nevertheless substituted at halftime by manager Louis van Gaal, who later clarified that it was done as a precaution and insisted that de Jong would be able to play in the upcoming encounter against Belgium.

De Jong is actually returning to Barcelona after suffering a thigh injury, the Dutch national team has now formally announced.

“Frenkie de Jong also goes home. He left the pitch following the break in the duel with Poland. His thigh is another area of concern.

Another Barcelona star, Memphis Depay, injured himself during the same game, and van Gaal announced following the game that the attacker will need to spend some time receiving medical attention.

The statement released by the national team, which states that the 28-year-old striker is also returning to Barça, conveys the same message.

Memphis, who was substituted at the opening of the second half due to an upper leg injury, has completed its training camp as well.

As de Jong becomes the fourth player whose injury has been officially confirmed, Barcelona’s international break is turning out to be problematic.

Considering that Depay is also injured, Jules Kounde has already been ruled out for about a month. Ronald Araujo was hurt just moments ago while Uruguay and Iran were playing a friendly, and de Jong is now also confirmed to be sidelined for the rest of the season.
