EPL has witnessed bad defenders. If they were so horrible, why were they signed? In many cases, the player prospered in another league, foreign competition, or when scouts were observing. We take a look at some of the worst defenders to ever play in the Premier League...CONTINUE READING THE FULL ARTICLE>>>

9. Claude Davis

After being demoted, he never returned to the Premier League. Davis has since played in lower leagues, notably for Crawley Town. Davis played two seasons in the Premier League, terrifying many fans. Given how bad he was, it’s no wonder that both seasons ended in relegation.

8. Rigobert Song

As a defender in the Premier League, Rigobert Song was terrible. He spent four seasons in the Premier League, between Liverpool and West Ham. Cameroon’s 138-cap center-back slammed critics who called him Rio Ferdinand’s replacement when he joined the Hammers, believing he was a better player. The prior statement was upsetting to the Manchester United defender, especially after Song’s poor displays for West Ham.

7. Gary Doherty

During his time at White Hart Lane, he was too slow for the Premier League. How he stayed at Tottenham is a mystery. Ginger Pele scored the winning goal against Arsenal in the 2001 FA Cup semi-final. His aims eclipse such happy memories.

6. Claudio Cacapa

Cacapa, capped three times by Brazil between 2000 and 2001, failed in England. The Brazilian’s English exploits ended when Newcastle got relegated in 2008-09. Cacapa spent two seasons at Newcastle before returning to Brazil in 2009. The defender never lived up to the hype and wasn’t worthy of becoming Newcastle’s 1000th player.

5. Bramble

Bramble’s greatest flaw was his inability to focus. He routinely made significant mistakes and slept during vital periods. After Sunderland released him in 2013, no club was willing to sign him for free.

4. Kromkamp

This defender lacked speed and was always beaten by league attackers. Management criticized him for not stopping box-crosses. He was a useless defender since he lacked speed and couldn’t stop box deliveries. After five months and 18 appearances, Liverpool released their new defender.

3. Sinclair

He had brilliant moments at Stamford Bridge. Like Titus Bramble, he made headlines as a mistake-prone Premier League defender. Sinclair became a Leicester stalwart after Martin O’Neill gambled on him in 2008.

Despite his large size, he was tormented during two relegations, which hurt his reputation. Sinclair played until 2015, but his mistakes made him the worst Premier League defender

2. Marco Materazzi

Materazzi is best known for manipulating Zinedine Zidane to be sent off in the 2006 World Cup final. His ten years at Inter Milan earned him a reputation as one of the best central defenders in Serie A, but Everton fans were subjected to a horrible season with him in 1998.

Materazzi was sent off four times in 27 outings for Everton before being sold back to Perugia. Everton was glad to see Materazzi go, despite earning lots of money from disciplinary fines

1. Khalid Boulahrouz

Khalid Boulahrouz cost Chelsea £8.5 million in the summer of 2006 to challenge Terry-Carvalho in central defence. His two seasons with the Blues were a complete flop and a very costly mistake. Maybe it was the cursed number nine shirt or maybe he just wasn’t good enough for the English top flight.
