A prominent social media user, Somto Okonkwo, alerted the public about the presence of counterfeit rice circulating in the country just before the festive season, urging caution in purchasing food items.
Japheth Omajuwa, a public analyst, expressed dismay over the prevalence of fake products and highlighted the lax enforcement of laws in Nigeria.
He emphasized that there are more incentives to break the law, and the legal system seems to punish those who adhere to regulations.
Omajuwa cited a case where authorities apprehended an individual operating a meth lab in Lagos but only imposed a relatively modest fine, allowing the offender to resume illegal activities with impunity.
He lamented the tragic loss of lives due to harmful counterfeit goods and criticized the legal system for providing cover to perpetrators.
Notably, NAFDAC recently made significant arrests, uncovering a syndicate producing counterfeit wines, soft drinks, and other consumables in Eziukwu Market, Aba, Abia State.
