The special sitting will be held on May 13. Wetang’ula said the main business during the sitting will be to consider the report from select committee tasked with investigating impeachment allegations against Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi.

“That, pursuant to the provisions of Article 152 (7) (b), of the Constitution and Standing Orders 64(3) and 66, I have appointed Monday, 13th May 2024 at 2.30 pm as the day and time for a special sitting of the House to receive the report of the Select Committee,” the communication from the speaker reads.

The MPs proceeded on a long recess on May 2, and are scheduled to resume on June 4. This is as per the House’s calendar of the regular sessions.

Wetangula directed the Clerk of the House to communicate the same to the members. “The Clerk is directed to circulate this notification to all members, prepare the necessary messages for formal conveyance to the House and make all necessary arrangements to facilitate the special sitting,” it states.

The 11-member select committee chaired by Marsabit Woman Representative Naomi Waqo held its first sitting on Thursday last week.

It has 10 days to conduct the business which includes calling witnesses to testify before it compiles the report. Linturi will also be accorded an opportunity to defend himself.

The committee was set to meet on Monday for an in-house activity before commencing its duties. During the special sitting, the MPs will also consider some “urgent business and requiring conclusion”.

They include Senate amendments to the Division of Revenue Bill (National Assembly Bill No. 14 of 2024). They will also consider a Report of the Departmental Committee on Finance and National Planning on the Ratification of the Multilateral Convention to Implement Tax Treaty Related Measures to Prevent Base Erosion and Profit Shifting.
