Argentina got out to a strong start, controlling possession and forging a few solid chances in the final third. However, it takes them longer than 45 minutes to identify the game-changing objective.
In the early moments of the second half, a spectacular goal by Mac Allister gave Argentina the lead. A few minutes later, Alvarez’s strike found the top corner to double the lead, making things even better for Argentina.
However, one of the major talking points of the game was Messi’s penalty miss in the closing minute of the first half.
Messi’s penalty miss could be a sign that Argentina will win the tournament this year. Mario Kempes lost a penalty in Argentina’s third game in 1978 before he went on to win the tournament for the nation.
The same thing can be said about Maradona in 1986 as he missed a penalty in Argentina’s third game. Messi has now done the same in 2022 and it could a great sign that Argentina will end up winning the tournament.
