In different parts of Nigeria, this chalk has its unique name. For the Efik/Ibibio, it is known as ndom. For the Igbo, this chalk is known as nzu. Also, in Edo, it is called eko.

Despite their different names, this chalk serves a purpose when taken into the body. For example, this chalk helps pregnant women against nausea, and many others consume it for eating pleasure.

Since this chalk is consumed by some groups in Nigeria, it is advisable that we know the health benefits of nzu, and the medical problems that can be managed by eating calabash chalk.

1. Treatment of morning sickness.

In pregnant women, morning sickness can be reduced by eating nzu or calabash chalk. Even though nausea or morning sickness has no effect on pregnant women, it can relieve you or morning sickness when taken into the body.

2. It supplies some nutrients to the body.

Pregnant women usually lack iron and calcium in their bodies. So eating nzu by pregnant women provides such nutrients to the body.

Note that too much iron or calcium is bad, and it should not be used regularly by pregnant women.

3. It removes toxic substances from the body.

Nzu helps in removing toxic substances in the body of humans. It also helps prevent toxins from absorbing into the body.

Furthermore, many people crave nzu, and this might lead to a disorder known as pica syndrome. This syndrome is the act of eating substances that are not food.

Nzu is good but too much of it can lead to a disorder. But it is good for pregnant women to help them against morning sickness or even against spitting.
