The 27-year-old, who arrived from Inter Milan this summer after helping the Serie A giants to an appearance in the Champions League finals, was previously retired from international duty in the wake of a fallout with Indomitable Lions boss Rigobert Song at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

But now, the former AFC Ajax standout could miss up to eight matches in the post-Christmas period should Cameroon qualify for the 2023 African Cup of Nations during the current international break when they host Burundi on 12 September in Garoua’s Roumdé Adjia Stadium.

Per a statement from Onana posted on his social media, the United keeper opened up surrounding why he initially walked away from international service but also spoke about the need to unite on common ground for the national team.

“In the world of football, as well as in life, decisive moments occur, demanding crucial choices. In recent months, I have been confronted with trials marked by injustice and manipulation. Yet, my unwavering love and attachment to my homeland, Cameroon, remain intact.”

“My desire to represent my country has never weakened since my youth, and this aspiration remains an inseparable part of my identity. Nothing and no one can shake this conviction.”

Onana has started life at Old Trafford in good stead despite already surrendering eight goals in just four appearances, and thankfully for the Red Devils, the club’s summer purchase of Turkish goalkeeper Altay Bayindir will come in handy should Onana set off to AFCON in January, though Bayindir would be backed-up by only Tom Heaton.
