He has been tipped to become the club’s highest earner after proving himself as last season’s star man, though one significant rule may have been broken in order to come to an agreement.

United had to fend off interest from Premier League rivals and abroad in order to negotiate a new deal with Rashford, but in doing so The Sun have claimed that he has been offered a bumper wage increase to £375,000.

The 25-year-old would have nearly doubled his previous salary and moved to the same wage that David De Gea earned before leaving on a free transfer.

United ran the risk of also losing Rashford for free, having triggered the one-year extension in his previous contract until 2024 – though he could have opted to leave on a free transfer at the end of the coming season. But in keeping Rashford, United have broken their ‘Cristiano Ronaldo rule’ introduced last season.

Club chiefs were keen to introduce the rule that would see all players agree to a wage cap to prevent the current squad reaching a similar wage to Ronaldo during his second stint at Old Trafford before his deal was torn up and he moved to Saudi Arabia.

The Portuguese striker was earning £500,000-a-week, but reports suggested that United did not want to offer any further contracts beyond £200,000-a-week.

If United have agreed to a weekly wage of £375,000 for Rashford it would significantly eclipse the mark set that would break the ‘Ronaldo rule.

However, as Bruno Fernandes, Mason Mount, Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire and Casemiro are all in the same pay bracket it was only a matter of time before the rule was tested.

United had been key to move away from the large contracts offered to the likes of Ronaldo and Alexis Sanchez as both failed to live up to expectations and left the club with their reputations much lower than when they arrived.

However, with Rashford still holding a bright future ahead of him, the Red Devils will hope that he is worth breaking their ‘Ronaldo rule’ for.

The possibility of Rashford leaving at a time when United have struggled to land a marquee striker for Erik ten Hag could have been met with backlash by both the fanbase and head coach, but keeping their star man at least solves one potential problem as they look to continue making progress under the Dutch boss….READFULL
