Silva has become a dream target for Barcelona this summer, although it has been questionable how they can afford him. Meanwhile, Cancelo is unlikely to have a future at the Etihad Stadium after his loan spell at Bayern Munich.

According to Diario Sport, Barcelona have now asked Man City for both players on loan. While it would seem illogical for the Premier League champions to do them such a favour, there would be a €70m obligation to buy attached to the Silva deal.

Therefore, by next summer, when there would only be a year remaining on Silva’s contract, Man City could earn around £60m from his sale.

Pep Guardiola has reiterated the importance to Man City of Silva, who isn’t believed to have any issue with his coach but would dream of joining Barcelona if the opportunity arose.

Now, though, Barcelona are trying to test their resolve in perhaps the only way they could make feasible from a financial perspective.

Competition from Paris Saint-Germain for Silva’s signature has faded, meaning it is now a tug of war between Barcelona and his current employers at Man City.

Cancelo, for his part, has an agreement on personal terms with Barcelona. Unlike Silva, he does have some kind of rift with Guardiola. Therefore, the escape route to Barcelona interests him.

The report does not specify if there would be any buy option included in the Cancelo side of the operation. The full-back is under contract in Manchester until 2027.

Man City colleagues could make Barcelona double switch

Silva has never played in La Liga before, but his fellow Portugal international Cancelo has, during a previous spell with Valencia.

After playing together for Benfica, Man City and their national team, Silva and Cancelo could continue their association at Barcelona. It remains to be seen how the treble winners will respond to the offer from the reigning La Liga champions, though.
