Cristiano Ronaldo has lost out to Thierry Henry in a YouGov poll which asked more than 1,000 football fans to select the greatest ever Premier League player.

The survey, which was conducted in association with Betfair, also asked supporters which goal and moment were the best in the competition’s history, as it approaches its 30th year.

Henry gained 15 per cent of the vote while Manchester United legend Ronaldo came in at second, with those aged 45-54 choosing him more than any other player.

The Portugal captain came ahead of Alan Shearer, Old Trafford icon Eric Cantona and Steven Gerrard, who make up the top five.

Other former United players to make the top 20 were Ryan Giggs, Peter Schmeichel, Paul Scholes, Wayne Rooney, Roy Keane and Rio Ferdinand.

Meanwhile, Dennis Bergkamp’s swivel goal against Newcastle in 2002 was voted the best Premier League goal.

Rooney’s overhead kick against Manchester City in 2011 was named as the second-best goal, with 31 per cent of United fans voting for it.

Cantona’s 1996 chip against Sunderland received 26 per cent of the Reds vote, finishing fifth.

Unsurprisingly, Sergio Aguero’s title-winning strike against QPR on the final day of the 2011/12 season was chosen as the Premier League’s greatest moment.

The striker and then-teammate Vincent Kompany also made the top 20 greatest players’ list.
