The family of Makhanya who lives at Esikhaleni in Empangeni; said Nondumiso Ntuli (34); was known to beat up and injure; Makhanya to such an extent that; Makhanya had moved out from the room they rented as a couple; and rented his own room in the same yard.

Though the couple continued to be lovers; they lived separately; but Makhanya continued to keep his groceries with Ntuli because she kept the refrigerator.

Makhanya’s family members told a local newspaper that; it was not unusual for him to receive death threats from Ntuli; now and again he would come to his family wounded after Ntuli had hit him.

All Makhanya’s family told the local newspaper was that; they did not know; what Ntuli held against Makhanya; because he was so scared of her; demonstrating that; they were ignorant of his GBV situation.

It is alleged that on Monday; Ntuli came to Makhanya’s family accompanied by a group of neighbours and told them that Makhanya had been stabbed while returning from a function.

They quickly rushed to Ntuli’s room and found Makhanya lying in a pool of blood; lifeless. The neighbours were quick to point out that they heard them arguing and Ntuli threatening to stab him.

The neighbours said it was not true that Makhanya was stabbed elsewhere; it happened inside Ntuli’s room because they heard them arguing.

It was then established that; minutes before Makhanya passed; they had argued over a sausage; which Makhanya walked in and took from the refrigerator.

The spokesperson for the SAPS in KwaZulu Natal; Colonel Thembeka Mbele said; the Eshowe police arrested a 34 year-old woman over the death of a 39 year-old man.

Makhanya was sitting with a serious case of gender based violence (GBV); which is frowned upon by society. The community looks the other way when a man is threatened; beaten and abused; by his female partner; some even laugh about it.
