Erling Haaland opened the scoring for City on a tight afternoon at the Etihad, firing home a clinical finish after some excellent work by Nathan Ake.
Trent Alexander-Arnold levelled for the visitors with an equally impressive finish on 80 minutes and both teams then settled for a draw.
Following the final international break of the year, City kicked off a hectic winter schedule with a decent point and Pep Guardiola’s side will have plenty of opportunities to reclaim their place at the summit.
There are some tough games to contend with in the near future but the Blues could put a good run together over Christmas.

Results over the weekend have seen City drop into second place, with Arsenal leapfrogging them into first after beating Brentford on Saturday.
Tottenham lost their third game in a row on Sunday and are ravaged by injuries, so perhaps facing them now is the best time for Guardiola’s men.
A trip to Aston Villa represents a massive challenge for the Blues but they will hope to string together a good run of victories against four lower-half teams after that. City end the year at home to Sheffield United.
