Well, Romano states that the Argentine actually agreed with Chelsea, after the Blues informed him that they would no longer be challenging PSG for Ugarte.

It was said that the Pochettino personally requested the 22-year-old’s arrival at Stamford Bridge as he aimed to increase midfield depth in west London, leaving many to wonder if Todd Boehly’s reluctance to rival PSG would upset the South American tactician.

However, it sounds as if the 51-year-old took the decision well.

Romano said: “Mauricio Pochettino was always involved in conversations with the Chelsea board over Manuel Ugarte. When Chelsea told him they were pulling him out, he was like: “Okay, he’s a great player, but we don’t want to enter into any crazy proposals with players.” Pochettino suggested not doing madness.”

Chelsea have since moved on.

Chelsea already exploring Ugarte alternatives

According to Football London, Chelsea have already opened talks with Southampton over a deal to sign Romeo Lavia after missing out on Ugarte.

The Belgium international is believed to have a £50m price tag on his head after a superb debut season with Southampton.

Interestingly – according to the Express – Eden Hazard advised Lavia to join Chelsea if the opportunity presents itself, as the pair spoke before playing for Belgium at the World Cup in December.
