According to Royston Drenthe, a former winger for Real Madrid, his failure at Santiago Bernabeu was due to his excessive love of women and parties.
Drenthe played for the Netherlands in the 2007 Under-21 Euro and then transferred from Feyenoord to Real Madrid.
After two unsuccessful loan stints with Hercules and Everton, the 35-year-old was released in 2012. He later admitted that he was distracted during his time at Real Madrid and paid the price for it.
“At the height of my profession, I was twenty years old. Entering the Real Madrid locker room had always been a fantasy of mine. Never will I forget that.
You do, however, lead a dual existence as a football player and a person. You can blend that up to a degree, but I didn’t feel the immediate necessity to alter my way of life,” Drenthe told Gazzetta.
Drenthe continued, “I now realize that I didn’t act appropriately and that I made mistakes. To be a pro, I wasn’t prepared. “I learn something new every time, but what happened, happened,” the saying goes. “I thought I was God, loved women, and partied too much.
