Champions League winner Vladimir Smicer, who won the competition with Liverpool in 2005, spoke exclusively to BoyleSports this week on a number of topics.

And revealed Belgian ace De Bruyne is the one he’d love his former club to have – but instead it’s Premier League rivals and current champions City.

But if the Reds could find someone of the same ilk, then they should make the move.

“It’s quite easy, Kevin De Bruyne!,” said Smicer when asked. “I don’t think he’s available but that kind of player, I’d like to see.

“A player with similar qualities to him, but I’ll leave it to Jurgen as he always makes a good choice – look at Diaz.”

In terms of new signings, Liverpool brought in the influential Luis Diaz in January while confirming the arrival of young, exciting forward Fabio Carvalho from Fulham.

But Smicer can’t see to much more for improvement looking to next season.

“If I’m Jurgen Klopp I’d be happy if everyone stays up front,” he said.

“I’d go for a midfield player as that’s the area where we can be a little bit stronger. Milner might not play again and in the middle of the park we need to be stronger.

“With Konate and Gomez, we have great choices at the back as well.”

Meanhwhile, Smicer believes Steven Gerrard is the standout candidate to succeed Jurgen Klopp as Reds manager.

The ex-Czech international played alongside Gerrard in the Champions League winning side of 2005 and says his leadership qualities make him a perfect fit for Liverpool when the time comes to replace Klopp in the Anfield dugout.

“I played with Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen who won the Ballon d’Or when I was there,” Smicer said.

“But to be honest as a leader, Gerrard was irreplaceable and fantastic for us. Every time he was on the pitch, I knew we had a better chance to win the game.

“He was brilliant and I love players who stay their whole career at one team.

“The most important thing he did was lead on the pitch. He didn’t talk that much at half-time or before the game, his leading was mainly on the pitch.

“I think all the Liverpool fans in the world are happy that Jurgen Klopp signed a new deal.

“He’s moving the club forward and they’re getting better and better, spending reasonable money.

“We’re not spending like Man United, PSG, or Man City. We still try and think economically and we are doing the right business.

“But in my eyes, Gerrard is the natural successor. He’s getting closer and closer. He’s been in Glasgow and Birmingham, so next stop Liverpool!”
