Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah scored for Jurgen Klopp’s side at San Siro, leaving the Scudetto champions facing an uphill task to keep their aspirations of continental success alive.
Liverpool did not need to be told twice to stamp their dominance on the Nerazzurri’s turf and put themselves in the driver’s seat for a place in the Champions League quarter-finals, with San Siro no longer being the intimidating venue it once was for English clubs.
After a perfect group-stage record of six victories from six, Klopp’s team made it seven in a row when Firmino headed home from Andy Robertson’s cross in the 75th minute, and Salah completed the scoring with seven minutes remaining.
With the EFL Cup already in their trophy cabinet and a ticket to the FA Cup quarter-finals secured, the quadruple dream is certainly alive and well for the hopeful Anfield faithful, no matter how much Klopp tries to downplay it.
When West Ham United came to Anfield for Saturday’s Premier League game, the VAR analysts were out in force, with Sadio Mane just about managing to stay onside and tap home from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s ball—whether it was a shot, cross, or pass, only the right-back knows—as Liverpool kept the pressure on leaders Manchester City, who remain six points clear after thrashing Manchester United in the derby.
TEAM NEWS:
Although no players have been declared out for the second game, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is concerned about Thiago Alcantara, Roberto Firmino, and Joel Matip.
However, there is reason to be optimistic about all three players’ availability, as each has completed full training ahead of the match.
If Matip isn’t ready to play, Ibrahima Konate might keep his spot in the backline, and with Diogo Jota back to full fitness, Klopp may want to shake up his front line to relieve the pressure on Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, and Luis Diaz.
