However, shortly before the halftime whistle Karim Benzema scored a goal which was later ruled offside after a VAR review.

In order to properly understand the decision taken by VAR, one must know what the rules of the game says as regards that type of situation.

Rule 1b of the offside rule clearly states that a player is in an offside position if any part of his head, body or feet is nearer to the opponent’s goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent.

Now the emphasis is on the “second-last opponent” and this is where it gets confusing for many people.

A careful look at the picture above will make one see that Karim Benzema was ahead of the second-last opponent when he received the ball which made him to be in an offside position.

The moment the two Liverpool defenders went behind Alisson, the one closer to the goal line assumes the position of a goalkeeper while the second defender becomes the second last opponent.

Now if one looks clearly, one would find out that Karim Benzema was ahead of the second-last opponent which clearly justifies him being offside according to the rule of the game.

The second thing to note is the manner in which the ball came to him, if the ball was kicked to him by a Liverpool player then it would have nullified the offside but the ball deflected off of Fabinho and that was why it was ruled as an offside.
