If you have kidney disease, cutting back on your potassium, phosphorus, and sodium intake can help you deal with the disease better. The foods with a lot of sodium, potassium, and phosphorus should be limited or not eaten at all. The severity of your kidney damage will determine what you can and can’t eat and how much you should be taking in.

Avoid or cut back on these five foods to keep your kidneys healthy.

1. Bananas

Bananas are known for having a lot of potassium in them. While bananas are naturally low in sodium, one medium banana has 422 mg of potassium in it, which is a lot.

If you’ve been told to cut back on your potassium intake, it might be hard to do so if you eat a banana every day. Unfortunately, many tropical fruits also have a lot of potassium in them. Pineapples, on the other hand, have a lot less potassium than other tropical fruits, which makes them a better choice.

2. Oranges and juice

While oranges and orange juice are known for having a lot of vitamin C, they also have a lot of potassium in them, too. 333 mg of potassium can be found in an orange that is 184 g in size. Also, 1 cup of orange juice has 473 mg of potassium in it.

If you are on a renal diet, you should avoid or limit oranges and orange juice because they have a lot of potassium. As a replacement for oranges and orange juice that has a lot of potassium in it, you can try apples, cranberries, and their juices. They all have less potassium than oranges do.

3. Tomatoes

Tomatoes are another fruit that is high in potassium, which may not be good for people who have kidney problems. It doesn’t matter if you eat them raw or stewed. They are often used to make sauces. When you eat a cup of tomato sauce, you can get up to 900 mg of potassium.

Tomatoes are used in many dishes, which is bad for people who are on a renal diet. Choosing a low-potassium option is mostly based on how you like your food to taste. However, substituting roasted red pepper sauce for tomato sauce can be just as good and give you less potassium per serving.

(4) Brown rice.

Unlike white rice, brown rice is a whole grain. It also has more potassium and phosphorus than white rice, which is why brown rice is better for your body. When brown rice is cooked, it has a lot of phosphorus and potassium. One cup of cooked white rice only has 69 mg of phosphorus and 54 mg of potassium.

People on a renal diet may be able to have brown rice, but only if the portion is controlled and balanced with other foods so that they don’t get too much potassium or phosphorus each day. Bulgur, buckwheat, pearled barley, and couscous are grains that have less phosphorus than brown rice. They can be used in place of brown rice in recipes.

5. Dairy

Food that is made from milk has a lot of vitamins and minerals. They’re also a good source of protein and a source of phosphorus and potassium that comes from the ground.

People who have kidney disease should not eat too much dairy, but if they eat a lot of dairy and other foods high in phosphorus, this can be bad for their bone health.
