According to a police report from Navakholo Police Station, officers responded to a distress call from the deceased’s older brother, who reported that his younger sibling was threatening to harm their 68-year-old mother.

The suspect, known for his history of drug use, had armed himself with a panga, a knife, and a jembe. He was in pursuit of his mother around the compound intending to cause her grievous harm.

Upon arrival at the scene, the team of officers led by Navokholo OCS Kennedy Odongo found a frantic mother, and the suspect in her pursuit.

Police officers intervened to calm the suspect, but he redirected his anger towards the OCS, attempting to strike him on the head with the jembe.

The OCS evaded the blow, using his right hand to block it, but unfortunately sustained two broken fingers in the process as he fell to the ground.

The suspect persisted and aimed to cut the OCS who was still down, and in the process, the OCS shot him fatally in the chest.

The two were rushed to the Navakholo sub-county hospital where the suspect was declared dead on arrival, as the OCS was attended to and referred to the Kakamega County General Referral Hospital for further treatment.

The Police have launched further investigations into what transpired before the incident, as the body of the suspect was moved to Kakamega County General Referral Hospital mortuary where it will await a postmortem examination.

According to a status of the family study conducted in Kwale County in 2022, drug abuse and mental health problems were among the leading causes of family breakups and conflicts, as parents were faulted for failing to create time to mentor their children as they grew up.

Other include unemployment, land disputes, lack of food, infertility issues, domestic violence and the death of parents were said to affect family stability.
