The position became vacant following the decision of Dave Umahi to minister after his victory at the polls.

The candidates are Linus Okorie, a former member of the House of Representatives, who represented Ohaozara, Onicha and Ivo Federal Constituency and Mr Nwabueze Nwachukwu, a 60-year-old businessman.

Okorie won in the primary conducted from the first primary held at Amuro/Mgbom Community Primary School field, Afikpo- the headquarters of the senatorial district.

Announcing the result, the chairman of the Electoral Committee, Comrade Ayo Olorufemi, said Okorie got 40 votes while Nwabueze Ogo Eze had 10 votes and Fred Okereke scored 7 votes.

Okorie had, in the 2023 general election, contested for the same senatorial seat but lost to Umahi.

Meanwhile, a 60-year-old businessman, Mr Nwabueze Nwachukwu, also emerged from the second primary, which was reportedly held at an unknown location in the state.
