Once upon a time, this celebrity power couple had the world captivated with their love story before they went their separate ways. I was an ardent admirer of their marriage for many compelling reasons.Jenifa has been a long-standing inspiration for me.
I followed her remarkable journey from her early days in the beloved sitcom I Need to Know to her ascent as the Face of Yoruba Home Video, her prominent roles in Nollywood blockbusters, and her impressive foray into producing and directing her films. In the same breath, I held a deep admiration for JJC, also known as Skillz, as I could effortlessly sing along to his every song.
Skillz was a pivotal figure in pioneering Afrobeats in the diaspora, making a significant impact in the UK and beyond. He led the musical ensemble “JJC & The $419 Squad,” showcasing talents like Smokey, SO Simple, and M.P. Moreover, he mentored DJ’Banj and Don Jazzy before they co-founded Mo Hits.
Additionally, Skillz donned the hat of a producer for the esteemed British hip-hop record company and musical group Big Brovaz, solidifying his status as a true superstar.
So, when they decided to tie the knot, my heart brimmed with happiness, especially for Funke Akindele, who had previously faced the trials of a failed marriage. To me, it signified a fresh beginning, with Funke now marrying a remarkably talented individual who complemented her skills perfectly. Like Jenifa, Skillz was a filmmaker, making their union seem like a match made in heaven.
Their journey together was a delight to witness. They embraced public displays of affection on social media, gracing red carpet events hand in hand, swiftly becoming the beloved power couple of Nigerian entertainment. I distinctly recall an enchanting moment at an AMVCA awards ceremony where they took the stage to accept accolades.
Funke graciously acknowledged her husband in her heartfelt acceptance speech. Before welcoming their adorable twins, Jenifa warmly welcomed Skillz’s children from previous relationships into her heart, celebrating their birthdays and earning the affectionate title of mummy.

I held out hope that this beloved couple, who had always enthralled us with their wedding anniversary celebrations, would find a path back to each other. But it was not to be, as JJC embarked on a new chapter by remarrying, dashing the hopes of a reunion.
Nevertheless, it was heartening to see them side by side once more at the premiere of “She Must Be Obeyed,” a series they co-directed. As they danced together, it was hard not to wish that their marriage had endured.
I’m consoled by the fact that they remain on good terms despite the end of their marital journey. I eagerly anticipate the prospect of seeing them collaborate on future projects, as their creative partnership has consistently yielded remarkable results.
