Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool must start Darwin Nunez in this weekend’s Merseyside derby following the completion of the striker’s three-game suspension.

Nunez was sent off his first Anfield start for the club as he retaliated following a long-standing feud with Crystal Palace’s Joachim Andersen and subsequently headbutted the defender.

Referee Paul Tierney showed no hesitation and brandished a red card in the 57th minute of the fixture, to the disbelief of the Uruguayan who had made an impressive start to life on Merseyside since his big-money from Portuguese giants Benfica.

Taking to Twitter on Friday morning, the former Liverpool defender, Carragher said: “Start him! Firmino has been great the last two games, but three games in a week won’t be easy for him. Nunez has been training & it’s one of the few areas we can freshen up with the quick turnaround.”

Following a sub-standard showing at Old Trafford last month, Roberto Firmino has since shown glimpses of his former self in the last couple of days as he notched a hat-trick of assists and two goals during the Reds’ 9-0 thrashing of Bournemouth, before scoring the equaliser in Wednesday’s win over Newcastle United at Anfield.

Nunez has already scored two goals for Liverpool since moving to Merseyside earlier this summer, finding the back of the net as a second-half substitute against Manchester City in the Community Shield and at Craven Cottage on the opening weekend of the Premier League season when Klopp’s side fought from behind to draw 2-2 with Fulham.
