The sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that the attacks were also intended to reassure Iran’s conservative domestic base and its militant allies abroad, as well as to deter Israel, the U.S. and terrorist groups from attacking Iran.
The targets of the missile strikes were allegedly linked to Iran’s enemies. Iran said that it targeted Islamic State militants in Syria, Jaish al-Adl terrorists in Pakistan, and an Israeli intelligence base in Iraq’s northern Kurdish region.
However, Iran did not appear to seek a major escalation that could worsen the regional conflict, especially amid the ongoing war in Gaza. Analysts said that Iran carefully calibrated the attacks to avoid a direct confrontation with Israel, the U.S. or their allies, while still demonstrating its strength and resolve.
Iran’s defense minister, Mohammad Reza Ashtiani, told reporters that Iran was a ‘missile power’ in the world and that it would not tolerate any aggression against the Islamic Republic of Iran.
“We will react, and this reaction will definitely be proportionate, tough and decisive,” he said, according to state media.
In response to Iran’s missile strikes, Pakistani forces carried out strikes inside Iran today, targeting what they said were militant camps in Iran.
