Though the Nigerian government has very strict firearms control measures, however, citizens who are above the age of 18 with no criminal record and who of sound health/mind can obtain a gun and a license by following these procedures:
Firstly, one must visit the Commissioner of Police in his/her state in person to request a gun license. The applicant would be issued a form that should be filled with all necessary information.
Secondly, a gun would have to be purchased by the applicant from the nearest licensed firearm dealer, after which the serial number on the gun would be submitted to the police. The following documents are also required:
Completed application form
National Identification Card
Copy of Address proof (attested)
Proof of age or affidavit in front of a Magistrate/Notary
Police Clearance Certificate
Medical report on mental health
Medical report on physical fitness
Passport size photographs (4 numbers)
The application and attached documents would undergo a validation and verification process to ascertain if the applicant meets all the required criteria to have a license. Once successful, the license will be processed – the applicant will be contacted when it is ready.
It should be noted that possession of the following arms are prohibited – explosive projectile; rocket weapons; bombs and grenades; machine-guns; shot-guns(other than automatic and semi-automatic); Dane guns; flint-clock and cap-guns.
