The Nakuru County government pledges to cover hospital bills for victims of the recent Mai Mahiu tragedy, which claimed the lives of at least 71 people and left over 91 missing.

However, amidst the destruction, a lonely storey house stands tall, with all neighbours swept away.

Governor Susan Kihika announced this commitment on Tuesday, stating that the county will prioritise the welfare of affected residents.

Naivasha Police Commander Stephen Kirui confirmed the incident, noting that several people had been rushed to Naivasha Hospital for treatment.

Rescue efforts are underway to locate individuals who remain missing following the tragic incident that occurred in the early hours of Monday morning.

Kirui said the dam burst its banks, sweeping through villages and cutting off traffic on the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway.

This catastrophe echoes a similar event six years ago in Solai, also within Nakuru County, where 48 lives were lost.

Images of houses covered in mud and roofs strewn all over dominated social media platforms as Kenyans consoled the victims of the tragedy.

The May 2018 disaster, involving a private reservoir on a coffee estate, occurred amidst weeks of heavy rainfall.

However, amidst the trail of pain and destruction, a storey building standing tall has caught the attention of Kenyans online.

During her visit to the scene, Governor Kihika conveyed her condolences to the bereaved families and friends, acknowledging the immense grief and uncertainty they are experiencing.

Surrounded by a perimeter wall, the house stands out in an open field covered with muddy water and debris, a testament to the severity of the incident.

Affected families are encouraged to register at Ngeya Secondary School, where a desk has been set up by the county, in collaboration with the Kenya Red Cross, to facilitate assistance distribution.

Most social media users commented on the house, with some pointing out that it was an act of God that it survived the tragedy.

Furthermore, the county government plans to conduct inspections across the region to identify potentially hazardous dams. Immediate actions, including draining, will be taken to mitigate the risk of similar natural disasters.
