This summer, both teams have been fighting to sign the France international, but Chelsea appeared to have made a final move by agreeing to a cost of roughly £55 million at the end of the week.
Even Joan Laporta, the president of Barcelona, was seen on camera telling a supporter that Kounde was leaving for Chelsea after being convinced by Thomas Tuchel on the phone.
The Catalan club, however, never gave up attempting to sign the 23-year-old, and they have been in touch with Sevilla’s officials all night and into the morning.
Reputable Spanish journalist Gerard Romero said on his Jijantes FC Twitch channel that Barcelona and Kounde inked a preliminary agreement on Saturday morning.
Prior to Barcelona pulling another financial “lever,” Sevilla had doubts that the Blaugrana would be able to match or even come close to Chelsea’s £55 million offer, but they have now verbally agreed to terms.
Barcelona always believed the Frenchman preferred a move to Camp Nou over a move to Stamford Bridge, despite the fact that he wasn’t prepared to reject a move to Chelsea like Raphinha did earlier this summer.
Barcelona has already derailed Chelsea’s transfer ambitions this summer, so if they were to defeat Chelsea, it would be nothing short of a tragedy for the Blues.
