It is quite common for women to suffer from some kind of vaginal infection at some point in their lives, whether due to the entry of bacteria, intestinal parasites, the appearance of fungi, or even a vitamin deficiency, among other possible causes. The clearest symptom that we are suffering from an infection in our intimate parts is vaginal itching, which is characterized by a rather annoying and uncomfortable sensation accompanied by a general irritation in this area....CONTINUE READING THE FULL ARTICLE>>>

Although there are pharmaceutical treatments that help to reduce this discomfort, in this article I will show you 10 home remedies for itching in the private parts that are very effective and useful as an aid to medical treatment for the cause.

In addition, I want to clarify that if this type of itching is constant or appears very often, I recommend that you go to the gynaecologist to find out what type of infection you have and, consequently, prescribe the most appropriate treatment. In such a case, it is not advisable to treat only the symptom of itching or stinging because it is likely not to be completely solved and your intimate health will worsen, so you have to treat the cause.

Natural yoghurt

If you have already been to the doctor and you know what is causing your vaginal itching, you can use the following home remedies for itching in the intimate area, as long as they complement the pharmaceutical treatment you have been given.

I will start by recommending the use of yoghurt, as this probiotic product provides good bacteria for the body and has antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties, which are great for reducing itching and stinging. In fact, it is a natural treatment for thrush that is well known for its effectiveness.

To use plain yoghurt to soothe itchy private parts, follow these steps:

After washing your hands thoroughly with soap and water, you can apply the yoghurt all over the affected area, or you can use a tampon by dipping it in the yoghurt and inserting it into the vagina.

You will notice relief almost immediately, but for maximum effect, leave it in for up to two hours.

Then remove the tampon, if you have used it, and wash thoroughly with warm or cool water and soap specifically for the vaginal area, or a pH-neutral soap, to remove all traces.

It is advisable to apply it twice a day until you notice that you no longer have this annoying symptom.

Sage infusion

Another good home remedy for vaginal itching is the sage plant. Sage infusion has antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, and antiseptic properties, making it an excellent remedy for this itchy feeling. To use sage to soothe itchy private parts, follow these instructions:

Boil a few sage leaves in water for 10 minutes to make an infusion or tea.

Strain the liquid to remove the leaves and allow it to cool.

Once the infusion has cooled, use it twice a day to wash the vagina for a few minutes. You can do this by irrigation or you can fill the bathtub with a little water to pour the infusion and do a sitz bath more comfortably. In the case of the bath, you will need more infusion, and I recommend preparing between 1 and 2 litres to pour into the water.

Garlic

Garlic has a powerful antibiotic action that fights a wide range of bacteria and fungi. To soothe vaginal itching with garlic, follow these instructions:

Peel and crush three cloves of garlic.

Boil them for 10 minutes and strain the liquid.

When it has cooled, wash the vaginal area with the infusion once a day for a week.

Another option if you want to use garlic for genital itching is to apply a little garlic oil to the area. This should be done a couple of times a day until you stop noticing the discomfort.

The essential oil of tea tree

Tea tree essential oil is one of the best known natural treatments to fight and prevent fungal and bacterial infections, as it has excellent antiseptic, antifungal, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties. To use this remedy, you can douche with water and tea tree.

Mix 1 litre of warm water with 10 drops of tea tree oil.

Pour the mixture over the area affected by the discomfort or prepare a sitz bath with tea tree diluted in the same proportion.

Another option is to soak compresses or a cloth in this mixture and dab it on the irritated and itchy area.

You can do this once a day for as long as the discomfort lasts.

Pennyroyal mint

This plant has a powerful antiseptic action, so it is also a good remedy for vaginal itching. If among the home remedies for vaginal itching and stinging that I show you, you want to try the infusion of pennyroyal mint, take note:

Just boil 30 grams of pennyroyal in hot water.

Strain the liquid to remove the leaves.

Once it is cool, douche twice a day with this infusion, or wet gauze or compresses to apply the pennyroyal mint with gentle touches to the affected area.

Camomile sitz bath

Chamomile is very effective for relieving itchy private parts as it has soothing, anti-inflammatory, and antiseptic properties. To wash the intimate area with chamomile, prepare a sitz bath as follows:

Prepare an infusion of chamomile with leaves and flowers (use 1 tablespoon of chamomile per 200 ml of water). Let it boil for 5 to 10 minutes.

Strain the infusion and let it cool down.

In a tub of lukewarm water or in a bucket or basin of water, add the infusion.

Sit so that the water covers your intimate area well and stay there for at least 15-20 minutes.

Do not rinse or dry the area directly. Wait at least a couple of hours before washing thoroughly.

Salt water bath

Salt water is antiseptic and soothing, so it can help with itching and stinging in the vagina. However, this remedy is not recommended as a first choice if the area is very irritated, as salt can be very stinging and irritating.

Prepare a salt water bath to soothe intimate itching like this:

Prepare a bucket of warm water or put a small amount of water in the bathtub, just enough to cover your intimate area when you sit down.

Add at least 5 tablespoons of salt, depending on the amount of water you use.

Sit down and let it take effect for 15 to 30 minutes, then gently pat the area dry.

You can repeat this as many times a day as you see fit.

Apple cider vinegar

Vinegar for itching is a very good remedy because, thanks to the acetic acid it contains, it relieves itching and reduces inflammation. I recommend using apple cider vinegar for itching in the intimate area in this way:

Soak a cloth, gauze, or compress in apple cider vinegar and gently apply it to the affected area. If it stings, you can dilute the vinegar with water.

Let it take effect for 15 to 30 minutes and wash off the residue with warm or cold water.

Note that another way is to make a sitz bath using about 5 tablespoons of this vinegar per litre of water.

Cold compress

One of the best home remedies for itching in the intimate area if you are looking for immediate relief is the application of cold, as it reduces blood circulation in the area and soothes and reduces inflammation. For example, you can use cold compresses for vaginal itching:

Soak some compresses or gauze in very cold water or wrap some ice cubes in compresses or gauze, or even in a clean cotton cloth.

Place the gauze over the genital lips and let the cold take effect for a few seconds. Also, especially if you use ice, gently dab the cloth on the skin without leaving it on for too long. You will notice some quick relief, but this remedy is not definitive for the itching to pass because the cause of the problem will have to be treated.

As the compresses warm up, you can soak them in cool water again. However, you should do this for a few minutes at a time and then allow the area to soothe and rest before applying another remedy or repeating this one.

This remedy is very good to combine with other remedies for additional relief.

Aloe vera

Aloe vera gel is very moisturising and soothing, and can help with some types of infections. To use aloe vera to soothe genital itching, take note:

Buy the aloe vera gel or extract it from the plant, but in either case, be sure to remove the aloin (yellowish part) it contains by soaking the cut leaf in water for 24 hours.

Use the aloe vera gel as an intimate moisturising cream or gel for the vulvar area and the entrance to the vagina, i.e., by gently applying it to the irritated and itchy area. You can apply it several times a day and for as many days as you need, until you no longer have discomfort or your medical treatment is over.

Another option is to soak a tampon in this refreshing gel and leave it in for a couple of hours. After removing it, wash the area thoroughly with a soap specifically for the intimate area or with a neutral pH. You can do this once or twice a day.

Intimate itching causes

What I know as itching of the private parts refers to those that can occur at the entrance of the vagina, on the inner and outer labia, i.e., the vulva. In addition, this type of itching is often accompanied by other symptoms such as irritation, inflammation of the labia, and redness of the vulva.

There are several possible causes, and, for this reason, it is necessary for a doctor to diagnose the problem and its origin in order to find the best treatment. These are the main causes of itching in the intimate area:

Vaginal infection: the most common is due to the appearance of fungi (candidiasis) and bacteria (such as gonorrhoea and chlamydia). Generally, in addition to vaginal itching, symptoms such as painful urination, lack of lubrication, unpleasant-smelling discharge, and pain during intercourse are also common.

Vaginal dryness: this is a genital disorder characterized by a lack of lubrication in the vagina, which can also cause itching of the vulva.

Genital seborrhoea: it is not very common in this area of the body but, if it does occur, genital itching is one of the symptoms of this problem.

Vulvar dermatitis: this is a type of vaginal infection that occurs due to the aggressions it suffers, either by contact (use of inappropriate clothing) or by an allergic reaction produced by creams, chemical soaps, deodorants and other products with aggressive chemical substances.

Skin parasites: the most common is scabies, which can cause intense itching in the vaginal area.

Pubic hair parasites: crabs are the most common microbes and are usually transmitted through sexual intercourse.

Tips to prevent itching in the intimate area

Finally, after explaining the possible causes and showing you the best home remedies for itchy private parts, I want to talk about how to prevent itching. Here are some tips on how to prevent itching in the intimate area:

Maintain good vaginal hygiene: proper washing of the genitals can help prevent many vaginal infections. Try to use specialised soaps for the intimate parts with natural ingredients.

Keep your anus clean: it is also important to keep this area clean, as germs and microbes can be carried into the vagina.

Wear loose-fitting and, if possible, cotton clothing to keep your private parts well ventilated and moisturised.

Use sanitary towels and menstrual cups: during menstruation, it is more advisable to use sanitary towels and menstrual cups than tampons, as they obstruct the outflow of blood and absorb it, but it can be retained for too long and, consequently, favour the development of vaginal infections.
