Many influential Nigerians have suggested the possible way to end the activities of the bandits and some offered to help.
Kaduna-based popular Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, is one of the influential Nigerians who have been trying to resolve the menace of banditry in northern Nigeria.
Gumi has been interfacing with bandits in their camps and believed the best way to resolve the issue of banditry is by dialogue. He is also one of the leading figures advocating for quality education for herders to change their orientation.
On several occasions, Gumi had interfaced with the bandits when innocent people were kidnapped in different parts of the northern region.
However, a report by Daily Trust Newspaper showed that the popular Islamic scholar has rescinded from negotiating with bandits, stating that he can’t risk his life.
Declaration Of Bandits As Terrorist Groups
Sheikh Gumi’s decision to stop negotiating with bandits came after the federal government of Nigerian declared the armed groups as terrorist groups and declared that he would no longer have any business with them.
Gumi believed negotiating with the armed groups who have been labeled as terrorists will expose him to danger and what he termed as an “unnecessary spotlight.”
The Risky Steps Taken By Gumi
Sheikh Gumi believed his decision to negotiate with the bandits was risky but chose to endanger his life for the sake of peace.
He believed somebody has to take risks for the sake of others but has to end his peace mission after the federal government declared the group as terrorists. Gumi can only negotiate with the bandits when the situation changes in the future.
