After years of estrangement from his family, the Duke of Sussex took a recent trip back to the UK to visit his father, which proved to be one of the “baby steps” the two are taking towards repairing their fractured relationship, according to a palace insider who spoke with People.
“I’m sure it was emotionally draining for both of them, but it was a step in the right direction. It was a positive move,” the source added of the brief visit.
A refresher that Harry flew overnight from Los Angeles to London and spent around 30 minutes with the king when the news of his cancer diagnosis was initially publicized.
Sources reportedly told People that the Duke of Sussex would have ideally liked to be with Charles longer, but that he was “grateful to be able to speak directly to his father and show his support for him.”
After Prince Harry’s trip to England, the royal made an appearance onGood Morning Americawhile in Canada for the Invictus Games Winter Training Camp and admitted that he felt grateful to have been able to visit the king following his health news.
“Look I love my family. The fact that I was able to get on a plane and go and see him and spend any time with him I’m grateful for that,” the Duke of Sussex told host Will Reeve.
Additionally, when asked whether Charles’ diagnosis could have a “reunifying effect” on the royal family, Harry referenced his connection with the Invictus Games competitors and their families: “Absolutely. Yeah, I’m sure. Throughout all these families, I see it on a day-to-day basis, the strength of the family unit coming together.”
Royal expert Ingrid Seward recently added her two cents about the duo—namely, that Charles would love for Harry to come back to the royal fold, however, Prince Harry’s contentious relationship with Prince William might prove to be a bit more difficult to repair: “Of course [Charles] would like Harry to be the prodigal son and come back and would be much happier if William and Harry were friends again.
