Manchester United & Newcastle United were the first two teams to advance to the final four of the competition after both clubs emerged victorious in their respective matches against Charlton Athletic and Leicester City.
And were joined in the final four by Nottingham Forest & Southampton with the latter pulling off an upset against Manchester City with two quick fire goals from Sekou Mara and Moussa Djenepo in the first half of the clash at the St Mary’s, with Pep Guardiola bringing on his first team players in the second half to try to salvage something but it did nto work as Ralph Hasenhüttl’s held on for a huge win.
While the former progressed on penalties after both sides played out a 1-1 draw at regular time, a crucial penalty miss from Joe Hodge cost Julen Lopetegui’s side a place in the next round.
