Liverpool stunned everyone by producing an unbelievable comeback against AC Milan in the 2003 UEFA Champions League final. Having trailed 3-0 at half-time, the game ended 3-3 in full time and extra time. It was eventually decided on penalties and Liverpool were declared champions after Andriy Shevhcenko’s spot kick was saved by Jerzy Dudek.

2. Asamoah Gyan vs Uruguay (2010 World Cup Quarter-final)

Ghana were awarded a last-minute penalty against Uruguay. They had the chance to become the first African team to advance to the FIFA World Cup semi-final. Unfortunately, Gyan’s effort struck the cross bar and Ghana finally lost on penalty shoot-out.

If John Terry had scored his penalty kick, Chelsea would have won the 2007-08 UEFA Champions League. But he slipped- and the ball went over. Chelsea ended up losing 6-5 to Manchester United on penalties.

4. David Trezeguet vs. Italy (2006 World Cup Final)

After playing a 1-1 draw in the 2006 FIFA World Cup final, the France vs Italy game had to be decided on penalties. Every other French player converted from the spot, except David Trezeguet, as France missed out on the chance to win their second FIFA World Cup trophy.
