Restricting these foods in the diet can help reduce stomach acidity, but doctors recommend increasing fiber in the diet when deciding which foods to eat for a stomach ulcer.

According to healthline, some foods to eat for stomach ulcers include:

High-fiber foods

A high-fiber diet is important for treating stomach ulcers. Research has shown that people who eat a diet high in fiber, especially soluble fiber, have a lower risk of developing stomach ulcers.

Foods high in soluble fiber for peptic ulcers include oatmeal, apples, peas, carrots, beans, and pears. Whole grains, nuts, potatoes, and cauliflower are recommended as insoluble fibers.

Foods high in flavonoids

Foods rich in flavonoids have been shown to inhibit the growth of the bacterium Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) in the stomach. This bacterium is the main cause of stomach ulcers and can wreak havoc by damaging the mucous membrane of the gastrointestinal tract.

Foods rich in flavonoids (e.g. strawberries, blueberries, broccoli, apples, celery, cranberries, and cranberry juice) seem to prevent the bacteria from damaging the stomach lining instead of killing it.

Foods high in vitamin A

Some studies have shown that vitamin A, also known as retinol, contributes to the formation of protective mucus in the stomach and gastrointestinal tract.

Foods high in vitamin A (or beta-carotene, which is converted to vitamin A in the body) include eggs, carrots, broccoli, sweet potatoes, and dark leafy vegetables such as kale and spinach.

Tea

Some studies have also shown that green tea, along with oolong tea and black tea, can prevent the overgrowth of H. pylori in the stomach. Even better, these teas did not harm the types of bacteria that are beneficial to the gut.

Antioxidant-rich foods

Antioxidants help eliminate H. pylori. Some studies have shown improvement in people who took small doses of vitamin C over a period of time.

Oranges are known to be rich in vitamin C, but they are acidic and can irritate the stomach. Try strawberries, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and potatoes, which are good sources of vitamin C.

It may come as a surprise that capsaicin, an antioxidant found in peppers, has a healing effect on gastrointestinal ulcers. However, capsaicin may only be effective for ulcers caused by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin. For ulcers from other causes, capsaicin may make the symptoms worse.

Foods to avoid:

Fried and fatty foods

You will find that eating large amounts of fried chicken can make the symptoms of stomach ulcers worse. This is because fatty foods are digested slowly by the body and therefore feel heavy in the stomach.

Slow digestion also means that food takes longer to ferment, leading to gas and bloating. Fried and fatty foods are on the list of foods that should be avoided at all costs if you have stomach ulcers.

Unfermented dairy products

Fermented dairy products such as yoghurt, cheese, and sour cream are associated with improved gut health and a lower risk of peptic ulcers, while non-fermented dairy products such as milk and ice cream are associated with poorer gut health and an increased risk of peptic ulcers.

Alcohol, coffee

Alcohol undermines the mucous membrane that protects the stomach and gastrointestinal tract, which can further aggravate the inflammation and bleeding of peptic ulcers. Coffee (even decaffeinated) can increase the secretion of stomach acid. For peptic ulcers, it is best to eliminate these drinks from the diet.

When adding or omitting foods from a peptic ulcer diet menu, it is important to know what your stomach can tolerate.

You may have no problem eating acidic citrus fruits such as oranges, or you may have no problem eating spicy foods. Suitability varies from person to person, so try different foods from this list to find out what is good for you.
