Fast food contains a mixture of some of the unhealthiest ingredients known to man, namely sugars, unhealthy fats, nitrates, and sodium. Together, these ingredients play havoc on the body, not only for older people, but for people of every demographic. Sugar is a source of empty calories, which increases the chance of weight gain without providing any nutrition.

Unhealthy fats like saturated fat increases LDL cholesterol levels, therefore making you more susceptible to heart conditions. Nitrates and salt are used as preservatives in fast food, and while nitrate has been linked with causing cancer, salt is associated with increasing blood pressure and causing bloating.

2. Carbonated drinks

Carbonated drinks are usually filled with caffeine, fructose and refined sugar. The caffeine content can trigger gout, and the sugar can increase insulin level, therefore, putting you at risk of having a heart attack by 20 percent.

3. Fatty meats

These are also high in saturated fats. The key with meat is to keep it lean. Tenderloin cuts tend to be leaner. Look for ground beef that is at least 95% lean. Ground turkey breast and chicken breast are other lean options.

4. Hot Dogs

Preservatives used in processed meats usually create free radicals within the body. Free radicals lead to oxidation of your cells and DNA and they can cause enough damage to lead to cancer or other health conditions.

5. Alcohol

Moderate drinking may be good for your heart, but heavy drinking can rev up the aging process. “Moderate” is one drink per day for women (such as a 5-ounce glass of wine or 12-ounce glass of beer) and two drinks for men.
