The people of the southeastern part of the country has witnessed the mixed experience of fear, happiness and anxiety considering the series of events that occurred in the region within this year. Now that the year is gradually quitting, it is important to look back and acknowledge the efforts of the country’s security forces in restoring a sense of security. In the first quarter of the year 2021, there was a series of violent agitations and wanton attacks by unknown gunmen, hoodlums and other criminals terrorising the southeastern part of the country. Before the deployment of the Special Tactical Command, the proscribed groups in the region used to impose an illegal sit-at-home order and forced people off the roads. Vehicles conveying goods were set ablaze for violating the illegal order. The situation will have degenerated into full-blown anarchy if not for the timely intervention of the tactical command. Through rigorous and effective military operations, several hideouts and camps used by the proscribed group were uncovered and destroyed, Logistics and other tools were set ablaze while weapons were seized.
The security agents of special tactical command were able to capture or neutralise several notorious commanders who led attacks on security formations, outposts and government facilities. Many of the criminals who participated in the destruction of Imo state police headquarters and correctional facilities were apprehended. These successes helped in restoring public support and confidence in military operations. It also led to the restoration of stability and a feeling of security.
Indeed the year 2021 has taken its toll on people living in the southeast. The federal government has technically saved the region from another civil war considering the level of violence and destruction that erupted within this year. To defeat this menace completely, the general public must be ready and willing to collaborate with the security forces by reporting suspicious persons or movements within their surroundings so that proactive measures can be taken to prevent unforeseen circumstances.
