Erling Haaland followed in his father Alfie’s footsteps this summer when he signed for Manchester City – but how much did nostalgia play a part in his decision to join the Premier League champions?
Having established himself as one of Europe’s most prolific goal-getters at Borussia Dortmund – where he scored a staggering 85 goals in 88 games – Haaland is now taking the English top flight by storm with 14 goals in 11 matches so far. And the 22-year-old shows no signs of slowing down.
Haaland is currently away on international duty as Norway play Slovenia and Serbia over the next few days. Both matches will take place in Nations League Group B4.
Next month it will be back to the Etihad Stadium for Haaland but why did the £51million bargain – who was born in Leeds – settle for City when deciding to leave Dortmund this summer?
During an interview with Norwegian media while on international duty, Haaland said: “I’ve been a City fan my whole life. My dad played there and such, I’ve scored 14 goals and I’ve had a decent start to the season.
“I made the club selection in terms of coach, players. That’s what I’ve been thinking about.
“At the end of the day, I’ve always been a City fan and that’s just the way it’s been. When I’ve gone to City, that’s to develop as best as possible and as much as possible in a positive way that allows me to become a better footballer so that Norway can use me – and whichever club I’m at can use me.”
