Tributes to Enock Mwpeu, 24, flowed around the entire Brentford Community Stadium early in the game as both sets of fans paid their respects to the former Brighton midfielder, whose career was cut short this week due to a medical condition.

His Brighton teammates quickly turned their attention to earning a potential first win for new manager Roberto De Zerbi, and Moises Caicedo unleashed a 25-yard rocket that forced David Raya into a full-stretch save.

The Bees were always going to respond as they sought to rebound from their heaviest-ever Premier League defeat at Newcastle last weekend.

However, luck was not on Bryan Mbeumo’s side; the forward hit the crossbar seven times last season and had no luck again when his dipping volley smacked the crossbar.

Brentford came alive as a result of the opportunity, and they quickly added to their 10 home goals this season when Frank Onyeka cut back to Ivan Toney, who produced a deft backheel into the bottom corner past Robert Sanchez.

Brentford remained dangerous as the hosts sought to end their three-match winless streak against Brighton, and Toney was at the heart of the Bees’ attack once more when he was brought down in the area by Joel Veltman for a penalty.

The striker confidently stepped up and made no mistake, sending Sanchez the wrong way to score Brentford’s 20th consecutive penalty.

Brentford needed a win after two straight defeats, and Toney once again demonstrated his worth to the Bees with his seventh and eighth goals of the season.
