8. Juan Cuadrado

Juan Cuadrado, another versatile Serie A star, produces great performances on the right side of the pitch. He can also play as a wing-back for the Seria A team.

This hard-hitting, yet elegant centre-back won a spot in the 2011 FIFA FIFPro World XI as a left-back. So good, they put him on the other flank. Ramos won La Liga, Euro 2008, and the World Cup as a right defender. His world-class career at centre-back cemented him as a versatile maestro.

6. David Alaba

The Austrian left-back has a reputation as a quiet star. The 21-year-old ability to play left midfield may not be important to Alaba, but his ability to play centrally is a rarity that Real Madrid will want to maintain.

5. Kevin De Bruyne

De Bruyne has worn many hats since Pep Guardiola became Manchester City manager in 2016. The Belgian has played as an attacking midfielder, central midfielder, winger, false nine, and second striker. De Bruyne just tied Thierry Henry’s record for most Premier League assists (20 in 2002-03).

4. Cesar Aspilicueta

The Spaniard has proven to be a fantastic acquisition for Chelsea, and not just because of his dedication to the team and desire to get his knees dirty on the field. Azpilicueta juggles multiple roles exceptionally well, including that of leader and a top-tier player. The versatile defender has been used by Thomas Tuchel as right back, centre back, and left back.

He first established his name as a right back, but today he plays in the centre of the field and acts as a kind of architect, a metronomic figure who can both rush forward and attack while also breaking up play and defending the backline. He effortlessly performs this for both club and country.

2. Lionel Messi

The Argentine has become a natural No. 10, but he still plays wide and upfront depending on the opposition and management. In each position, he’s won more trophies than a Football Manager simulation and is a legend. Age is slowing him down, but he was once the top player in the world at three positions.

1. Cristiano Ronaldo

And while he may have started his career as a winger, Cristiano Ronaldo has developed into a devastating central striker. Ronaldo’s goal-scoring record is unrivalled, and he can accomplish so because of his direct style of play and unwavering focus on the opposing goal.
