With prediabetes numbers skyrocketing to over 15 million affected individuals in the UK alone, pharmacist Graham Phillips, who has over 35 years of experience and is the founder of ProLongevity is advocating for a proactive approach to health.

After decades in the field, Phillips became disillusioned with traditional medication, observing that his patients were getting heavier and sicker, while drugs only masked their problems instead of curing them.

This to him establishing ProLongevity, a service dedicated to helping people shed pounds, reverse prediabetes, and stop type 2 diabetes dead in its tracks by monitoring blood sugar levels and advising on necessary lifestyle and dietary adjustments.

Graham is now highlighting five red flags that shouldn’t be ignored, as they could indicate a high risk of diabetes, prompting an urgent need to reassess one’s diet.

Forget the traditional Body Mass Index (BMI) measurements, according to Graham a much more meaningful measure of health is the waist-to-height ratio: “If your waist circumference is more than half your height, you could be at risk of diabetes.”

Graham said: “When insulin levels are high, your body effectively locks away fat stores, making it difficult to access them. This can lead to a situation where individuals gain ever more weight while simultaneously feeling hungrier than ever before.”

Skin conditions such as acanthosis (darkened skin patches) and even skin tags are indicative of underlying metabolic issues.

Signs such as even slightly raised blood pressure, elevated blood sugar levels, excess body fat, especially around the waist and abnormal cholesterol levels, should not be ignored, as you may be developing metabolic syndrome which not only increases your risk of diabetes, but predicts a 10-year reduction in life expectancy

“Hangry” outbursts may indicate “rollercoaster” blood sugar levels, which can result from an imbalanced diet leaving people feeling hungry, tired and irritable.

Graham emphasised the importance of paying attention to these warning signs and taking proactive steps towards a healthier lifestyle. He said: “Spotting these warning signs early and acting upon them NOW can make a significant difference in halting diabetes in its tracks and extending overall life expectancy.
