The eight-man shortlist for the award included Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold – but the Man City star was chosen as the winner instead.

The votes were collected from the public on the Premier League website, combined with those of the 20 Premier League club captains and a panel of football experts.

De Bruyne has scored 15 goals and provided seven assists, coming into the best form at a crucial moment in the title race.

Earlier, Salah was declared the Football Writers’ Association Men’s Footballer of the Year – this award was voted on by the journalists.
