The federal government on June 5, officially announced the banning of Twitter in Nigeria two days after the microblogging site deleted controversial tweets of President Muhammadu Buhari where he tweeted that he would deal with secessionist groups in the language they will understand. While given the reason for the suspension of Twitter in the country, the Nigerian government claimed that Twitter was been used by some elements to undermine Nigeria’s corporate existence. However, few months down the line it appears that there are indications that the federal government was shifting ground when Buhari hinted during his October 1 Independence Day presidential speech that the ban would only be lifted only if certain conditions are met.
Also, in November, the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo, revealed that apart from a few conditions, that the dialogue for the lifting of the ban on Twitter is in progress.
