Goalscoring midfielders don’t exactly grow on trees. They don’t tend to come cheap either, meaning Patrick Vieira, Dougie Freedman, Steve Parish and co won’t have it easy as they look to fill a Conor Gallagher-shaped void at Selhurst Park.

Though Fomin, a midfielder boasting a Lampard-esque penchant for late runs into the penalty area, actually scored more goals than the Chelsea loanee in 2021/22. He found the net 12 times while providing another five assists, even if many of his goals did come from the spot.

Alexander Manyakov, Fomin’s agent, confirmed that Crystal Palace ‘really like’ the 25-year-old Russian. He was the club’s second-choice midfield target during the January transfer window, behind Donny Van de Beek.

Van de Beek would end up at Everton of course. By then, there was no time for Palace to turn their attention to Fomin so late in the window, particularly with Dynamo Moscow reluctant to cash in midway through the campaign.

It is understood that Fomin could now end up at Freiburg, the perennial overachievers of German football, with the Europa League outfit potentially set to trigger the £10 million release clause in his contract.
Who will replace Conor Gallagher at Crystal Palace?

“How will I assess the season for Fomin? I think he’s had a great season,” says Manyakov. “No wonder such a good club as Crystal Palace was interested in him in the winter.

“Now, we have options. A colleague from Germany spoke about a German club from the Bundesliga collecting information about Fomin. What club? A strong, strong middle club.”

Manyakov was reluctant to mention Freiburg by name but a ‘strong, strong middle club’ plying their trade in Germany? A side who finished sixth while reaching the DFB Pokal final – albeit losing to RB Leipzig – certainly fit the bill.

It is not certain at this stage whether Freiburg will face competition from Crystal Palace as Fomin weighs up his next move.
