Manchester United’s situation continues to deteriorate.

Erik ten Hag will have had high expectations for a significant improvement when they travelled to Brentford for the Saturday afternoon matchup after a humiliating opening-day loss at home to Brighton.

But within minutes, it became clear that there was a real chance the Dutchman’s day at work may turn out to be much more discouraging.

The Bees seized a well-earned lead with less than 10 minutes remaining, albeit under unfavourable circumstances.

David de Gea let a shot slip under him and seep into the goal as Josh Dasilva tried his luck from a distance and defeated him.

Ten Ten Hag reacted indignantly to it, but Cristiano Ronaldo’s gestures were in sharp contrast.

Unfortunately for the veteran, it did not have the desired effect. Before the half, Brentford added two more goals.

First, after pathetic defence from a corner, Ben Mee headed in from underneath the bar.

That elicited a response from Ronaldo that perfectly captured the sentiment of sadness felt by most United supporters.

When a fourth player came 10 minutes before halftime, the home crowd and, for that matter, the visiting away supporters, could hardly believe it, and it was the best of the bunch as Bryan Mbeumo neatly finished off a daring counterattack.

Since allegations surfaced during the summer that Ronaldo wants to leave Old Trafford in quest of Champions League play, Ronaldo was making his first competitive start for United.

The Portuguese superstar did not play until the second half of Brighton’s defeat last weekend, as Ten Hag surprised everyone by using Christian Eriksen as a false-nine.

The Red Devils boss had no choice but to unleash his wantaway striker against Thomas Frank’s team because of how ineffective his team had been in the first half against the Seagulls.

In particular, Ten Hag’s remarks on Ronaldo from midweek caught our attention. Regarding the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, he stated: “He had a terrific training week, and I believe he played [against Brighton] for a little over half an hour.

I would say he now has two half-games under his belt. We shall find out the starting XI tomorrow. Naturally, I have made a decision, and I will stick with it.”

Prior to the summer transfer market closing at the beginning of next month, Premier League rival Chelsea and French powerhouse Paris Saint-Germain are rumoured to be keeping an eye on Ronaldo.
