Magistrate Rose Iyorshe delivered the judgment, specifying that the amount should be paid in three installments from June to August. Selumun had brought Philip to court, alleging that he began behaving in a manner incompatible with her lifestyle shortly after their marriage in 2015.

The couple married under Tiv native laws and customs, but the union had not produced any children. Both parties acknowledged the irretrievable breakdown of their marriage and the absence of love between them.

The court recognized that the petitioner acquired the disputed land before the marriage and failed to provide sufficient evidence of her financial capacity to build the estate.

The judgment dissolved the marriage and ordered Selumun to pay Philip N10 million as his contribution to the development of the block of flats on her land during their relationship and marriage.

Selumun had claimed that her husband became violent after marriage, making life unbearable. She sought a dissolution of the customary marriage and requested the court to compel Philip to vacate the matrimonial home developed by her.
