The National Youth leader of Ohanaeze, Engineer Damian Okafor, who gave the admonition in his Christmas message to Igbo youth, lauded the industrious spirit of Ndigbo, saying that despite the enormous challenges, Igbo youth are making huge progress.
“While we have refused to look back and succumb to the daring challenges of the day, it is pertinent and appropriate to know that there is light at the end of the tunnel. Even as we are tempted to liken the present situation of this country to a war period, we are optimistic that we are coming out stronger and victorious. No Retreat No Surrender!
“Our achievements are salient even as our resources are meagre. When the challenges of COVID-19 came, the economy crashed and almost everybody was adversely affected.
“We lost most of our Youths not to the disease, but to hardship. People were hardly fed, hospitals were inaccessible, market values of goods and services skyrocketed; it was better imagined than experienced. Too unbearable to describe, but God kept us going.”
Okafor further lamented violent attacks by unknown gunmen in the region, which he said, had held the region to a standstill.
“The mystery of Unknown Gunmen was another stalemated operation that held Alaigbo to an unfortunate standstill. Prominent sons and daughters of Igbo Land were assassinated, Economic curfew (Sit-At-Home) was imposed on the region. our brothers and sisters serving in the security forces lost their lives to the unknown gunmen and vice versa; which is a clear case of IGBOS killing themselves for unjustifiable reasons.
“But our continual engagement of the government and the Youths through press Statement, sensitization, radio and television programs, etc have yielded considerable success. We are not ignorant of the fact that it is not over yet but we have to encourage ourselves.”
On the sale and intake of hard drugs in the region, the National Youth leader disclosed that they had waged serious against it, with a task force in place to ensure that consumers and sellers of hard drugs were given the run for their lives.
“On the case of excessive intake of hard drugs, we have carried out a lot of sensitization, inaugurated task force committee to that effect and done a lot of publications to curb the ugly trend.
“Recently, we are working with the NDLEA bosses in all the states of Alaigbo and we have made significant progress in arresting the manufacturers and dealers of those hard drugs. A lot of them are cooling off at the detention facilities awaiting the full arm of the law while so many of them have been chased out of Igbo Land with their properties confiscated by the law.”
On insecurity, Okafor further said, “We have prevailed on the State Governors to inaugurate Ebube Agu Security outfit for the region as it has been unveiled. Most of their replies had been that the boys are undergoing training with some of them setting a deadline of this December for it.
“Glad to inform you that Ebonyi State Governor has inaugurated the Ebonyi State Chapter of Ebube Agu Security outfit on Wednesday 22nd December 2021 at Pa Oruta Ngele township stadium Abakaliki. While we encourage other Governors to follow suit, we advice the Youths to be security conscious.
