Arguably the finest left-back in the Eredivisie, Dutch international Malacia appears to be on the verge of becoming one of the biggest exports in Feyenoord’s history.

But while his departure looks cut and dry, where the attack-minded wideman ends up is far less certain.

Manchester United have been linked, following the appointment of former Ajax and Utrecht coach Erik Ten Hag. According to De Telegraaf, Newcastle are watching Malacia closely too, with Premier League scouts compiling growing reports about a man who played a colossal 50 games in all competitions last season while providing five assists.

And, with Feyenoord planning for life post-Malacia, the Rotterdammers appear to be closing in on a replacement. According to 90Min, Maatsen is heading back to the club where he started his career.

After an outstanding spell on loan at Coventry City, the 20-year-old is leaving Chelsea on a permanent basis despite Ben Chilwell’s injury issues and the uncertainty surrounding Marcos Alonso’s Stamford Bridge future.

The report adds that Ajax also enquired about Maatsen. But the Netherlands U21 ace obviously feels that he has unfinished business at De Kuip.

Malacia, meanwhile, is free to leave Feyenoord for just £12 million. Lyon have had a bid accepted, though it remains to be seen if the Rotterdam-born 22-year-old holds out for a move to the other side of the Channel.

“Malacia marked Antony out of the game,” Dutch legend Willem van Hanegem told ESPN after the defender produced an outstanding performance against Ajax in December.

“Malacia played him completely upside down. If Malacia continues to play like this, he will become the left back of the Dutch national team.”
